Reading Athens. A city walking tour through the works of Menis Koumandareas

Event Speakers:
Alexandra Tranta
Event Date:
29 March 2026
11:00 - 14:00
Location:
Hotel Grande Bretagne

Our tour will begin outside Hotel Grand Bretagne to talk about Koumandareas’ posthumously published The Desert Siren and wonder how you can love a city that you can’t stand. Koumandareas’ works will take us by the hand and walk us through Athens to visit the places where his original, multifaceted characters lived out their inner contradictions, leading lives that might be small but never insignificant. From the heart of the city to Monastiraki and Gazi, we will follow the traces of Koumandareas’ literary heritage and get to know the city through his eyes.

Guided by Alexandra Tranta, this literary walk maps out the city of Athens through the pages of Menis Koumandareas, exploring the neighborhoods, textures, and urban stories that shaped his work.
