Words meet image and literary thought converges with filmic language in an evening dedicated to the profound, uncompromising gaze of the Central European tradition. The festival is proud to screen one of the finest examples of synergy between cinema and literature, Werckmeister Harmonies, a collaboration between the late, great Béla Tarr and 2025 Nobel Prize–winning author László Krasznahorkai.

About the film:

In an unnamed town in Central Europe, at an unspecified moment in time, a mysterious circus arrives. Its only attractions: the carcass of a gigantic whale and a misshapen figure known as “the Prince.” The circus’s presence triggers an eruption of anger, destruction, and crime, witnessed by the town’s young, otherworldly postman, János Valuska.

The screening will be introduced by László Krasznahorkai.
